Heroic efforts failed to save two children pulled from a Wilcox County swimming pool Tuesday evening.
Bryson Driver, 9, and Jayla McKinney, 15, ran ahead of adults and jumped into the deep end of a friend's pool on Fir Road south of Rochelle, said Maj. Bryant McCard of the Wilcox County Sheriff's Office.
The boy's 20-year-old sister, Stephanie Driver, and his 53-year-old mother, Marie Driver, frantically tried to rescue the children, but neither could swim, McCard said.
A rescue hook and Stephanie Driver's cellphone were found at the bottom of the pool after she dropped it while calling authorities, he said.
Wilcox chief deputy, Col. Adam Newman, arrived at about 6:30 p.m. and pulled the youngsters out of the deep end and administered CPR until rescue personnel arrived.
Efforts to save their lives continued in route to and at Dorminy Memorial Hospital in Fitzgerald, but doctors were not able to save them. Jayla was a foster child, who was living with the Drivers on Dykes Avenue in Rochelle.
McCard said the children were in the water more than seven minutes before help arrived.
