The Kroger store on Zebulon Road plans to increase the number of gas pumps to help alleviate congestion.
The Kroger Co. has applied for a conditional-use permit to allow the expansion of its fuel center at 5950 Zebulon Road, with variances in parking requirements and in canopy signage. The matter is on Monday’s agenda of the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission meeting, but it is slated for ratification, which usually means the item will be approved without discussion.
The fuel center was constructed in 2004 and it included a small brick building and four double-sided gas pumps, according to the commission’s staff report. About 94 parking spaces were eliminated from the Plantation Centre shopping center to accommodate the fuel center.
The new permit would allow two double-sided fuel pumps to be added, one on each end of the current fuel center, the report states. An underground diesel gas tank also will be installed, according to information provided by Kroger. The existing canopy will be extended on each end to cover the new gas pumps.
The addition will eliminate eight parking spaces, the staff report states.
“The fuel center is very busy and adding two new dispensers, as well as reconfiguring the landscaped islands and parking around the fuel center, will help alleviate congestion for customers circulating in and around the fuel center,” according to Kroger. “The addition of the diesel tank will allow customers with work trucks, RVs and diesel-fueled cars to be able to obtain diesel fuel at the Kroger fuel center.”
The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at Macon City Hall, 700 Poplar St.
