Worship center planned in Bibb

A proposed worship center is planned near Mercer University Drive and the Interstate 475 entrance ramp.

Mission of Swaminarayan Gurukul Inc. is seeking a conditional-use permit for 222-230 Mercer Junction to allow the worship center. The item is on the agenda for the Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission’s meeting Monday.

Plans are to combine two 2-acre tracts within a commercial/industrial development approved in 2004 that is commonly called Mercer Junction, according to the commission’s staff report.

Plans are to build an 8,400-square-foot building that will include a 6,400-square-foot meeting area/sanctuary with seating for 150 people, a kitchen and a 2,000-square-foot residence, according to the report. The plan submitted to the commission staff shows a pre-fabricated metal building with brick facades on the front and side of the building

Access to the property will be off Mercer Junction.

Future plans call for an additional 8,400 square feet for a total of 16,800 square feet plus a grassed play yard.

The report states “the proposed place of worship should be compatible with adjacent land use.” However, it also states that since the property to the north and west of this property is vacant, “allowing the worship center may limit future use of alcohol-related businesses on these properties.”
