Georgia National fair attendance numbers up

The Georgia National Fair set a new attendance record, despite several days of cool, rainy weather.

Attendance at the fair, which opened Oct. 8 and closed on Sunday, was up almost 10,000 over last year, drawing 416,709 in 11 days, said Michele Treptow, director of communications for the fair.

“To put it in football terms, we had a very satisfying fourth quarter win,” Treptow said.

Several community merchants and food vendors also had a record year, according to Treptow.

Interstate 75 was backed up near the fairgrounds on Sunday afternoon as people took advantage of the last day to attend. The weather on Sunday was cool and sunny, a marked change from the rain that fell in the area for most of last week.

Although Treptow said following attendance numbers for the fair was like “riding a roller coaster or following the stock market,” the overall conclusion was a good one.

“The bottom line is ‘Woo hoo!’,” she said.
