Fatal shooting may be Byron's first homicide since the 1990's

A man was found fatally shot in the back of the head at a grain facility across from Byron Elementary School on Friday.

Byron Police Chief Wesley Cannon said 911 received a call about 7:15 a.m. reporting a person laying in a gravel road area at W.E. Green Transport on New Dunbar Road. Cannon said the shooting did appear to be execution style, and that it was being treated as a homicide.

According to Cannon, Byron has not had a homicide since the 1990s.

The victim was a black male between the ages of 25-35, wearing shorts, a t-shirt and tennis shoes. No identification was found on the body. He was shot once in the back of the head. Cannon said the shooting probably took place between midnight and 7:15 a.m., and that the body was probably lying in the gravel area for two or three hours. The investigation is likely to be hampered by last night's heavy rain, since evidence on scene may have been washed away.

Police are trying to identify the body through fingerprints. The body has been sent to the GBI crime lab for an autopsy.

Anyone with information should call 822-9111.
