Fiance killed in apparent accidental shooting in Jones County

Playing around with a gun apparently cost a Jones County man his life Tuesday night.

John Stephen Spires, 21, died of a single gunshot wound to the face at his home at 111 Deer Creek Circle off Buck Road, said Jones County Sheriff Butch Reece.

Angel Lynn Barrett, 19, told investigators her fiance was playing around with a gun and pointed at her and pulled the trigger which clicked but didn't fire. When she came back into the room from doing laundry, he handed her the weapon, she pointed at him, pulled the trigger but the gun went off that time, Reece said.

Investigators found an empty .9 millimeter handgun and believe Spires may have loaded the gun after Barrett left the room to check on laundry.

Capt. Earl Humphries said the couple had been living in the mobile home off Buck Road for the past few months and had planned to marry once they found work.

An autopsy is being performed on Spires' body a the GBI Crime Lab and investigators plan to search the residence to look for evidence that corroborates with her story.

The Jones County Sheriff's Office is also consulting Assistant District Attorney Greg Bushway on the case.
