Man accused in Macon shooting arrested

Macon police arrested a man and accused him of shooting another man about 3 p.m. Wednesday in the 3700 block of Walker Avenue.

Police said Desmond Hopkins, 21, has been charged with aggravated assault in the shooting of Kalvin Bland, 20. Police recovered a .380-caliber handgun and a rifle at the scene of the shooting, according to a police news release.

While investigating the shooting, police raided a home at 3748 Walker Ave. and found about a pound of marijuana, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .25-caliber handgun, according to the news release. Police arrested Andre Wright, 21 and Rodrick Wright, 25, at the home.

The brothers were charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

While investigators were at the scene of the shooting, Hopkins’ mother, Sheila Hopkins said someone was shooting at her son and he shot back.

“He thinks he hit someone, but he’s not sure,” she said.

Sgt. Melanie Hofmann said Bland was shot in the shoulder and taken to the hospital.

Willie Mae Ross said she called the police after seeing four “boys” with guns.
