Law offices burn early Monday morning in downtown Macon

Macon-Bibb firefighters are trying to determine what started a fire early Monday morning that heavily damaged law offices at 923 Washington Ave.

Fire Chief Marvin Riggins said the department got the call shortly after 2 a.m. that the two-story brick building that houses the Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz law firm was on fire.

Neighbor Dan Zook said he was on his porch nearby when he saw and smelled smoke.

“We actually drove up here and took a look at it and it looked like just the porch but then it turned out it seemed to be fully involved,” said Zook, who called 911.

Fire investigator Ben Gleaton said the fire began in the basement where boxes of old legal files were stored.

“Nothing appears to be suspicious about it right now,” Gleaton said. ---- Investigators will examine pictures of the damage to better determine what sparked the fire.

There were no injuries, Riggins said.

The flames caused major damage to the basement and significant damage to two rooms on the first floor but the building appears to be structurally sound, Riggins said.
