Fire damages downtown Macon law offices

Macon-Bibb County firefighters are trying to determine what caused an early morning fire that heavily damaged law offices at 923 Washington Ave.

Fire Chief Marvin Riggins said the building that houses the Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz law firm was on fire shortly after 2 a.m.

Neighbor Dan Zook said he was on his porch when he smelled smoke and noticed a fire on the porch of the two-story brick building with a basement.

Zook called firefighters who he said were on the scene in what seemed like about 30 seconds.

No one was inside the building that sustained heavy damage to the basement where boxes of legal files were stored and no one was hurt fighting the fire, Riggins said.

The fire department was trying to locate the owner of the building to try to figure out where the fire started.

A portion of Washington Avenue was closed as firefighters battled the blaze.
