A Macon man died in an accidental shooting this morning on Woodfield Drive in Bibb County.
E.J. Fried, 85, was found with a shotgun blast to the chest shortly after 9:30 a.m. in the middle of Woodfield Drive off Mercer University Drive, said Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.
The preliminary investigation indicates Fried stopped his station wagon near the Eagle Gun Range off Mercer University Drive and tried to remove a shotgun from a mount in a jeep he was towing behind the wagon, said Sean Defoe, public information officer for the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
Macon Water Authority workers reported seeing Fried standing in the street before hearing the shot, Jones said.

Investigators believe the trigger may have caught on the mount as Fried was trying to remove the weapon, Jones said.
The family is receiving visitors at the home of Guy Fried, 12 River Trace in Macon.
