P&Z: Redding school, bikini bar back on zoning agenda

The Macon-Bibb County Planning & Zoning Commission is expected to discuss again Monday a rezoning application for the vacant Redding Elementary School building.

Plans are to rezone 8062 Eisenhower Parkway from a residential district to a planned development extraordinary district to allow for a community center, a shopping mall with a convenience store and offices within the existing structure, according to the commissioner’s staff report. Three conditional-use permits for separate uses also are on the agenda for the same property.

The issues were deferred at the July 13 meeting because only three commissioners were present and the vote was split. Also, commissioners wanted to give the applicant, Tony Widner with Widner & Associates and representative for owner Ashok Patel, an opportunity to meet with area residents.

At the July 13 meeting, some residents said they were concerned because it was unclear exactly how the property would be used, and that the project would create unneeded space that would compete with existing businesses.

Also back on Monday’s agenda is a application that would allow a bikini bar in south Macon. It also was deferred at the last meeting because of a split vote.

A conditional-use permit for 1508 Rocky Creek Road to allow a nightclub with alcohol in an existing shopping center was filed by applicant Ennis Odom.

The nightclub, called Sinsations South, would go in a 5,400-square-foot space at South Macon Plaza. Plans include a 960-square-foot dance floor and 60 seats. It will feature “bikini dancers, belly dancers and pole dancers,” but no nudity, according to information provided to the commission office.

The meeting begins at 1:30 p.m. at 700 Poplar St. at Macon City Hall.
