McIntyre man killed in train accident

An employee for Rescar Industries died Friday evening after sustaining injuries while working on a train in Gordon, officials said.

Damien Whipple, 24, of McIntyre, died when he fell off one train car and under another while the train was being switched, Wilkinson County Coroner Billy Matthews said.

Matthews and Gordon police said it appears to have been an accident, but the department still is investigating.

Officials from the Occupational Health and Safety Administration are investigating the scene, something that is standard procedure when a death is involved, said G.T. Breezley, the area director of OSHA’s Atlanta office.

Breezley said he was unaware of any previous incidents involving Rescar.

Calls to Rescar’s offices in Gordon and to its corporate headquarters in Illinois weren’t returned. Rescar provides maintenance to companies that own rail rolling stock, according to its corporate Web site.
