Elizabeth Reed Music Hall, a former downtown hot spot for live music, is under renovation and could reopen soon.
A Macon couple, David Thompson and his wife, Madalyn Davidoff, purchased the Cherry Street property 18 months ago. Thompson said he is close to getting a tenant, with plans to put a restaurant downstairs and a music hall upstairs.
“We want to get it back to what it was a decade ago,” Thompson said.
The music hall, formerly Rivalry’s, was renamed in 1994 to pay homage to an Allman Brothers Band classic, an instrumental tune “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” The song’s name comes from a headstone in Rose Hill Cemetery, which the band was known to frequent during its early days in Macon.
Thompson said the restaurant/music hall will keep the Liz Reed name.
