Perry firefighters battled an early morning fire for about three hours at Tolleson Lumber Company.
At about 1:30 a.m. firefighters got the call after a night security guard noticed the blaze in a mill, said Perry Fire Chief Joel Gray.
"It was stubborn," Gray said. "We got a knock down on the fire in about 30 minutes but there were patches of sawdust smoldering and we made sure we didn't have anything come back to haunt us."
The fire appeared to have started on the second floor near some machinery along a catwalk and spilled down to the floor below, Gray said.
While mostly sawdust and wood chips were burning Gray estimates at least $30,000 worth of equipment was lost in the fire but there was little damage to the metal building, he said.
