A family-owned business in Forsyth was heavily damaged by fire Easter morning.
The fire at Atkinson’s Mid GA Auto Repair on U.S. 41 south of Forsyth was reported just before 6 a.m., said Shane Cook, Monroe County Emergency Services’ public information officer.
The building was ablaze when fire engines from Monroe County Emergency Services and the City of Forsyth Fire Department arrived at the repair shop, he said.
Close to 50 firefighters, including volunteers from Bolingbroke and High Falls fire departments fought the blaze.

“It was engulfed in flames when we arrived … we had to evacuate,” Cook said. “It was too hot.” Also firefighters were concerned about flammable liquids and propane tanks inside the building.
The fire, which involved the entire building, including an office and six repair bays, was contained about 10 a.m., he said.
Some firefighters were still at the scene early Sunday evening to put out hot spots.
No one was in the building at the time of the fire and no one was injured, he said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
“Our hearts go out to Mr. (Jimmy) Atkinson and his family,” Cook said. “He’s been in business for 18 years and at this location the last 10 years.”
