Man accused of robbing downtown Macon restaurant indicted

One of two men accused of robbing the Checkers fast-food restaurant on Spring Street on Jan. 19 was indicted Tuesday by a Bibb County grand jury.

Eric Laren Daniels, 26, of O’Hara Drive North, is charged with armed robbery, according to Bibb County Superior Court records.

The other man accused in the robbery, 27-year-old Benjamin Hill, was shot by Macon police after fleeing the scene. Hill died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

Officers chased Daniels in a car until he wrecked the vehicle at the corner of Mead and Guy Paine roads.

Daniels is being held without bond at the Bibb County jail, according to jail records.

Also indicted Tuesday:

Ÿ Ricardo Lawrence, 33, of Bondsview Drive, is charged with aggravated assault stemming from an allegation that he beat a woman with a hammer in Fort Hill on Sept. 25, 2008, according to court records.

The woman told police the man hit her several times with the hammer. An officer reported noticing small bruises in the shape of a circle on her arms, according to a police report. Lawrence is being held at the Bibb County jail on $5,600 bond, according to jail records.

Ÿ Haywood Smith IV, 22, of Rutherford Ave., is charged with aggravated assault stemming from an allegation that he shot a woman in the leg Aug. 1, 2008, according to court records. Smith is being held at the Bibb County jail on $12,300 bond, according to jail records.

Ÿ LaAnthony Bernard Bonner, 40, of Jeffersonville Road, is charged with rape stemming from an allegation he raped a woman Dec. 12, 2008, according to court records. He is being held without bond at the Bibb County jail, according to jail records.

Ÿ Henry Edward Clerval II, 36, of Bay Harbor Lane, is charged with aggravated assault and two counts of theft by taking a motor vehicle, according to court records.

Macon Police Chief Mike Burns kept Clerval from leaving a gas station Feb. 27 after finding him in possession of the chief’s daughter’s stolen car.

Clerval also is accused of assaulting a man with a box cutter on Nov. 16, 2008, and stealing a car on May 9, 2008, according to court records.

He is being held at the Bibb county jail without bond, according to jail records.
