Hundreds of workers were evacuated from the Fickling building in downtown Macon after smoke was reported shortly after 10 a.m..
Macon-Bibb County fire units have searched the building and have determined it was a problem with an elevator that generated smoke on one of the higher floors.
Capt. Kenny Nobles of the Macon-Bibb County fire department said a belt slipped off the elevator motor and caused the smoke that set off smoke detectors. An automated alert instructed workers to flee the building.
Workers lined Mulberry Street for about 40 minutes as fire crews investigated inside.
Building maintenance workers were going to fix the problem so employees began filing back into the building at about 10:40 a.m., Nobles said.
