Flames destroy log cabin on Lake Tobesofkee

Flames tore through a large two-story log cabin this morning on Lake Tobesofkee in Bibb County.

Macon-Bibb County firefighters found the house engulfed in flames when they arrived at 1518 Beaver Oaks Drive before 10:30 a.m.

Firefighters were tackling the flames from all directions and quickly contained the fire that had already destroyed much of the home, which neighbors say had been vacant and for sale for some time.

Macon-Bibb County fire investigator Ben Gleaton said he will begin looking into the cause of the fire as soon as the structure cools enough to allow him to enter.

The dense wood of the logs made the fire burn hotter, Gleaton said.

Capt. Stephen Stafford said a huge plume of smoke filled the sky and could be seen from Thomaston Road as firefighters arrived on scene.

He praised the crews for keeping the flames contained to the sprawling home that sits on the shore.
