More banks broken into overnight in Bibb and Crawford counties

Thieves targeted at least three more banks overnight in Bibb and Crawford counties.

Two branches of Atlantic Southern Bank were hit after 3 a.m. today, said Carole Soto, executive vice president of Atlantic Southern Bank.

Soto was first alerted to a break-in at the Roberta branch on Dugger Avenue in Crawford County and while a bank manager was responding to that incident they discovered the branch in Lizella was also hit. That's the same bank that was broken into on Feb. 28.

Atlantic Southern executives also learned of another break-in overnight at the Robins Federal Credit Union on Zebulon Road, Soto said.

Bibb County sheriff's Lt. George Meadows said deputies are combing the county searching banks for suspicious activity.

Meadows said the culprit entered the Atlantic Southern branch in Lizella but did not get any coins. The burglar tried but did not gain entry to the Robins Federal Credit Union, he said.

Soto said a surveillance video from one of the banks shows a person dressed in black carrying a red sack but the face is hidden from view.

The Colonial Bank on Thomaston Road was broken into early Wednesday morning and Bibb investigators discovered there had been a rash of bank burglaries in the Columbus area where 15 banks have been broken into.

Investigators suspect the recent incidents could be latest in the serial bank robberies.
