A water main break is to blame for ice on Interstate 75 southbound near Hartley Bridge Road in Bibb County that caused three accidents this morning.
Lt. George Meadows of the Bibb County Sheriff's Office reports authorities have just discovered the break after responding to the accidents on the slick road.
The ice was so bad a deputy had trouble walking on it, Meadows said.
The mishaps began at about 6:40 a.m. when a vehicle spun into the retaining wall just south of Hartley Bridge Road for the second time in as many days.
A second accident quickly followed in the same location and the third accident happened just north of the exit.
Meadows said a driver slid into a construction barrel that lodged under the car.
Meadows encourages commuters to avoid that stretch of interstate in both directions until temperatures warm up later this morning.
He advised southbound motorists to take Ga. 247 and asked that northbound travelers exit at Byron to avoid rubber necking traffic delays.
