Columbus Road is open to traffic after what was originally thought to be a water main break on Columbus Road turned out to be a broken fire hydrant.
Darryl Macy of the Macon Water Authority said crews responding to the 4500 block of the road between Eisenhower Parkway and Mercer University Drive found that a vehicle apparently hit the hydrant and broke it. The driver did not report the break, Macy said.
Macon police dispatchers said the incident happened at about 5 a.m. today and one of the lanes was originally closed.
Macy said it could be 4 p.m. today before the hydrant could be repaired.
Motorists should take Eisenhower Parkway or Mercer University Drive to avoid the work crews near Ebenezer Church Road.
