Religious leaders, business owners holding rally to condemn crime

Religious leaders and business owners in south Macon are holding a rally Saturday to condemn crime and uplift residents.

“We want to send out a resounding message to stop the violence, stop the crime, stop the stealing and the killing,” said the Rev. Mary Butler of Evangelical/Liberty Christian Church, 4290 Houston Ave.

Butler said as Macon police investigate an increase in armed robberies and gun violence in south Macon, it is important to challenge criminals and recognize the upstanding citizens.

“We are tired of our young people dying in the street and south Macon having a bad rap,” she said. “We have good people, and merchants and entrepreneurs doing good things and trying very hard.”

The rally will take place at 3 p.m. at the Fish House on Houston Avenue, across from Bruce Elementary School, 3660 Houston Ave.

Organizations involved with the South Macon Christian Churches Community Connection will be participating.

Various local officials, including Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones, are expected to attend.
