MLK Commission unveils events

Macon’s Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, which Mayor Robert Reichert appointed last year, on Tuesday unveiled its tentative plans for celebrating the life of the late civil rights icon.

The events run from now through April. Many are concentrated around King’s birthday, which this year will be marked Jan. 19. Some of the events have been staples for years, and the commission is working to add new ones as well.

Among the commission’s major tasks is cataloging, summarizing and putting on a calendar all of the events in the community, said Elaine Lucas, chairwoman of the commission. They are adding events each day, she said, and are still finalizing the panel’s membership.

“The goals of the Martin Luther King Commission are very, very simple,” Lucas said. “It is to provide opportunities to honor the memory and ideals of Dr. King throughout the year.”
