Council asks mayor to find funds for Booker T. Washington center

Macon City Council on Tuesday requested that Mayor Robert Reichert find emergency funding for the Booker T. Washington Community Center.

Center officials said they need $15,000 to reopen for a short term basis. The center has been closed for a month-and-a-half. Council members are especially concerned that the facility, located in Pleasant Hill, reopen in time for the school system’s holiday break. The last day of classes is Friday.

That means a special called meeting of the council likely will be required to appropriate the money in time. Reichert seemed agreeable to finding the funding, and was scheduled to meet with Booker T. officials Thursday.
