Macon-Bibb County firefighters are trying to determine what sparked a fire in a vacant house at 3911 Travis Boulevard off Rice Mill Road in south Macon.
As Capt. Tom Musselwhite was headed into work from Hartley Bridge Road about 8 a.m. he saw smoke rising into the sky and called dispatchers, but crews had already been sent to the fire in the one-story wood home at the corner of Spencer Circle.
No one lives at the home and the natural gas had been cut off but the electricity was still hooked up, Musselwhite said.
Musselwhite will probe the cause of the fire once firefighters are finished at the scene, he said.

As the cooler weather is on the way, he urges all residents to properly maintain their heating systems.
When powering up the heat for the first time he advises opening the windows to clear any smoke from burning dust that accumulated in the system over the summer to prevent smoke and fire alarms from sounding.
