UPDATE: BB&T building workers allowed back into building after evacuation for suspicious device

Macon police have determined the suspicious device found in the BB&T building's parking lot in downtown Macon was an empty suitcase.

Police spokeswoman Sgt. Melanie Hofmann said employees evacuated from the high-rise were allowed to go back inside at 11:50 a.m.

About 75 people were evacuated from the building on the corner of Walnut and Second streets just after 10 a.m.

District Chief Cliff Rushin of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department said the suitcase was found in one of the trash bins on the fourth floor of the parking deck off Walnut Street.

Macon police Sgt. Willie Brown said everyone was told to leave the building until the device could be examined.

The high-rise bank building is next to the Bibb County courthouse where some employees had voluntarily evacuated, Rushin said.
