About 75 people have been evacuated from the BB&T building in downtown Macon due to a suspicious device found in the parking deck.
District Chief Cliff Rushin of the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department said a suitcase-type device was found in one of the trash bins on the fourth floor of the parking deck off Walnut Street.
The bomb squad of the Macon Police Department is on the scene investigating the device that was discovered shortly after 10 a.m., Rushin said.
Yellow caution tape has been strung to rope off the sidewalks on Second Street in front of the building where fire trucks and ambulances are standing by.
Macon police Sgt. Willie Brown said everyone was told to leave the building until the device can be examined. The building is now empty, Brown said.
The high-rise bank building is next to the Bibb County courthouse where some employees have voluntarily evacuated, Rushin said.
