News MIDDAY UPDATE: Bertha becomes 1st hurricane of Atlantic season; Police find teen subject of Amber alert in Georgia; A-Rod’s wife alleges infidelity in divorce papers

Hurricane Bertha continues to strengthen as it moves over the central Atlantic Ocean.

As of 11 a.m. today, the Atlantic season’s first hurricane was centered about 775 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands. National Hurricane Center forecasters say Bertha is expected to turn in the general direction of Bermuda.

It’s still to early to tell whether Bertha will hit the island, but forecasters urged residents to monitor the storm’s progress.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to speeds of 90 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is expected during the next 24 hours, and forecasters say Bertha could become a Category 2 hurricane later today.

Bertha is headed west-northwest at about 15 mph and is expected to slow down in the next couple of days.

Police find teen subject of Amber alert in Georgia

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation canceled an Amber alert after a pregnant teenager was found safe in Georgia.

Seventeen-year-old Erica Medina of Nashville had last been seen in La Vergne on Sunday after agreeing to ride to Florida with 19-year-old Zachary Owers.

Police were especially concerned for the girl’s welfare, saying Owers is a known gang member with a long criminal history and was known to carry a gun.

The TBI said Medina agreed to go with Owers, but was later held in the car against her will.

She was found safe, still with Owers, in Locust Grove on Sunday night. The city is about 35 miles southeast of Atlanta.

A-Rod’s wife alleges infidelity in divorce papers

Alex Rodriguez’s wife filed for divorce today, calling her husband an adulterer who ‘‘emotionally abandoned his wife and children.’’

‘‘The marriage of the parties is irretrievably broken because of the husband’s extramarital affairs and other marital misconduct,’’ according to Cynthia Rodriguez’s petition for dissolution of marriage, filed Monday in the family division of Miami-Dade County Circuit Court.

The New York Yankees third baseman, who earned his 12th All-Star selection Sunday, has refused to comment on his relationship with the pop singer Madonna, who denied any romantic involvement with the slugger in a statement posted Sunday on

‘‘The petitioner has exhausted every effort to salvage the marriage of the parties,’’ Cynthia Rodriguez said in the filing. ‘‘However, Alex has emotionally abandoned his wife and children and has left her with no choice but to divorce him.’’

The couple, who married in November 2002, have a $12 million, six-bedroom house in the upscale Miami suburb of Coral Gables.
