Houston students get top STAR awards

Two high school seniors from Houston County tied for the region's STAR student award during a dinner banquet tonight at Macon State College.

Among 21 Middle Georgia counties, the Region 6 winners were Beth Boyd of Houston County High School and Dallas Michelbacher, a senior at Northside High School in Warner Robins, who tied with the highest SAT score from one sitting.

Both scored 2340 on the test out of a 2400 possible.

Boyd and Michelbacher will now compete for the state STAR student title April 30 in Atlanta.

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition award is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and judges students based on their SAT scores, class ranking, teacher recommendations, an essay and interviews, according to a news release.

Other STAR student nominees were:

Laura Harshbarger, Baldwin County High School in Baldwin County; William Karlson, Stratford Academy in Bibb County; Steven Himer, Bleckley County High in Bleckley County; Sarah McMahon, Jackson High School in Butts County; Anna Jolley, Crawford County High in Crawford County; Elizabeth Holmes, Crisp County High School in Crisp County; Mindy Harrell, Dodge County High School in Dodge County; Lyle Cason, Fullington Academy in Dooly County; Felipe Archila, Dublin High School in Dublin City; Lydia Morgan, Piedmont Academy, Jasper County; CJ Childs and Danielle Lassiter, Jones County High in Jones County; Nathaniel Rowe, Lamar County High in Lamar County; Sharon Davis, Trinity Christian School in Laurens County; Jaharris Collier, Macon County High in Macon County; Cameron Parker, Mary Persons High in Monroe County; Chris Fincher, Peach County High in Peach County; Ben Woods, Hawkinsville High in Pulaski County; Sydney Clark, Putnam County High in Putnam County; Anna Kennedy, Wilcox County High in Wilcox County and Courtney Smith, Wilkinson County High in Wilkinson County.
