House votes to boost sheriffs’ death benefits

The Georgia House of Representatives voted 164-0 today to boost death benefits for sheriffs who die before retirement.

House Bill 358 would grant a $15,000 benefit to former sheriffs who would otherwise not be eligible for normal death benefits under the Sheriff’s Retirement Fund of Georgia. The current death benefit in such cases is $7,000.

The bill’s sponsor, Rep. Willie Talton, R-Warner Robins, is a former chief deputy in Houston County.

The bill now goes to the Senate.
