Skeletal remains discovered at about 9:30 this morning appear to be those of an adult female, Macon police Capt. Jimmy Barbee said.
Barbee said it appears the woman may have been stabbed in the head. An autopsy will be performed, and a forensic anthropologist will be called in to further examine the bones.
It's not clear how long the remains have been in the vacant lot near the intersection of Winship Street and Niagra Avenue, which is near Mercer University Drive. But Barbee said he estimated the remains have been there at least six months.
Police said they plan to review missing persons lists from the past year in Bibb and surrounding counties in an attempt to identify the remains.
