Searchers looking for body of boating accident victim

Divers from the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department are assisting the Georgia Department of Natural Resources this afternoon as they search for the body of Chris Thompson, who was killed in a boating accident on Lake Sinclairin Baldwin County late Saturday night.

About 30 minutes after the 11 p.m. accident, rescuers recovered the body of Thompson's father-in-law, Steve Xavier Lewis, 49 of Adrian near the scene of the accident. Their boat collided with another boat crossing the lake at a high rate of speed during a bass tournament, authorities said.

It appears both men died on impact as the larger Fiberglas bass boat rode over the top of the smaller aluminum boat, said Sgt. Bill Goodson of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

Cadaver dogs alerted this morning in an area near the crash site where the water ranged from 40 to 70 feet deep, said Cpl. Robert Peacock of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.
