Byron wildfire blamed on train

The malfunctioning brakes of a train started a wildfire this afternoon that covered 25 acres in Byron and had firefighters from multiple agencies trying to get it under control.

Peach County Fire Chief Jeff Doles said the fire started at about 1:27 p.m. when the brakes locked on a train, causing the fire to ignite.

Peach County, Byron, Houston County and Macon-Bibb fire departments are fighting the blaze, he said, along with the Georgia Forestry Service.

At about 4 p.m. Doles said he expected it would take another two or three more hours to get the blaze under control. The fire burned in the area of Kirkland Drive, Richardson Drive and Tucker Road.

No one had been evacuated, Doles said.
