Autumn bliss scalloped apples

6 large baking apples (gala, rome, or winesap), peeled and thinly sliced)2 tablespoons lemon juice1/2 cup light brown sugar, packed1/4 cup all-purpose flour1 teaspoon ground cinnamon1/2 teaspoon salt1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg1/2 teaspoon ground ginger1/4 teaspoon ground cloves5 tablespoons butter

Serves 8.

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Spoon apples into a lightly greased casserole. Sprinkle with lemon juice. Combine remaining ingredients and stir until crumbly. Sprinkle mixture over apples. Bake for 40 minutes, stirring well once every 10 minutes or baking.

Note: Serve this as a delicious side dish with roasted poultry or pork , adding 1 cup of sweetened dried cranberries during the winter holidays. Use any leftovers to serve as a topping for French toast or homemade poundcake with vanilla ice cream.
