Grandma's chocolate cake

3 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened

chocolate, melted and cooled

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter,

softened 2 1/4 cups

brown sugar

3 eggs

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 teaspoons baking soda

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup sour cream, soured milk

or buttermilk

1 cup boiling water

Makes 12 servings.

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease and flour two 9-inch layer pans or a 9-by-13-inch pan.

Beat chocolate with butter. Add sugar and beat until well blended. Add eggs one at a time and beat until batter is smooth. Stir in vanilla.

In a separate bowl, whisk dry ingredients. Beat them into the batter alternately with the sour cream. Add boiling water; mix. Pour into prepared pans.

Bake 35 to 40 minutes for 9-by-13 pan, 25 to 30 minutes for layers, or until cake tests done. Cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn onto wire racks to cool completely before frosting.
