ATLANTA -- An autopsy shows a 20-year-old maintenance man who had just begun a life sentence for molesting and killing a 7-year-old Georgia girl used his sweat shirt to hang himself in his prison cell, and prison officials say he was not on suicide watch at the time.
The GBI released the autopsy results Friday. Ryan Brunn was found unresponsive in his cell Thursday at the state prison in Jackson.
Department of Corrections spokeswoman Kristen Stancil says Brunn arrived at the prison Tuesday and was interviewed by mental health staff Wednesday.
Stancil says Brunn was in a segregation cell for his safety but wasn’t placed on suicide watch based on the counselors’ findings.
Brunn on Tuesday pleaded guilty to the December killing of Jorelys Rivera.
