The Wilkinson County tax commissioner was jailed Wednesday on theft and drug-possession charges stemming from a six-month GBI investigation into alleged stealing at his courthouse office in Irwinton.
Kevin L. Rauscher, 51, was arrested about 11 a.m. Wednesday after authorities pulled him over while he was driving toward his house on Bear Camp Road on the south side of town.
Rauscher was being held at the Wilkinson County jail, charged with theft by taking and possession of the painkiller hydrocodone, GBI agent Tom Davis said.
In late June, investigators began probing the Wilkinson Tax Commissioner’s Office to find out if money had been stolen from the office. GBI agents and a forensic auditor examined computers and files.
Davis on Wednesday said the theft charge against Rauscher was “related to his office” and that it involved stolen money. He would not provide more details about the case.
