It used to be that college football games were held strictly on Saturdays (not counting bowl games, of course).
Fridays are for high schools. Sundays and Monday nights are for the NFL. But Saturdays, those were devoted to college.
Then ESPN came along. Now we have college football games on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays.
I suppose if you are a college football fanatic, the prospect of having a game virtually every day could be exciting, but for me, I like my action confined to those Saturdays. Having a game every day, for me at least, makes it wear out for me a lot faster.
Anyway, there's a pretty good slate of games tonight, including Southern Miss at South Carolina (ESPN, 7:30 p.m.); Northern Illinois at Iowa State (FXSS, 8 p.m.); West Texas A&M at Grand Valley State (SportsSouth, 8 p.m.); Pittsburgh at Utah (Versus, 8:30 p.m.); and Southern Cal vs. Hawaii (ESPN, 11 p.m.)
Of course, a lot of people in these parts will tell you that the season doesn't really begin until Saturday, when Georgia battles Louisiana.
THURSDAY'S BEST BETS: If you aren't a college football fan, there are a few other options. "Rookie Blue" (ABC, 9 p.m.) is new on the networks.
On cable, Lifetime has new episodes of "Project Runway" at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m.
