'Rizzoli & Isles' Premieres

TNT adds to its lineup of female-oriented dramas with the premiere of "Rizzoli & Isles" tonight at 10 p.m. (It's 65 minutes, so set your recording devices accordingly.)

Angie Harmon ("Law & Order") is Rizzoli, a tough, tomboyish cop who looks like, well, Angie Harmon. Sasha Alexander ("NCIS") is the brainy Isles, a medical examiner who is a walking encyclopedia and Rizzoli's best friend.

I guess the show is going for a "Cagney & Lacey" vibe for the 21st century, though in the pilot, Isles is given little to do as Rizzoli tries to hunt down an escaped serial killer that she once put away. I wonder how much a Medical Examiner can do on a series like this one, unless they go the "Bones" route and have Isles doing ridiculous things like questioning suspects.

Meanwhile, "R&I" is more adult-oriented than other TNT shows and the pilot features a few moments that aren't for the squeamish.

But overall, "R&I" -- much like TNT's other similar dramas -- doesn't do a whole lot to distinguish itself as something unique. But then, that hasn't been a problem for its other shows like "The Closer" and "HawthoRNe," so maybe that isn't an issue.

MONDAY'S BEST BETS: It's funny that, given the new shows for summer programming, how disappointing it is to have a week full of reruns like last week.

It's not as if the summer drama is spectacular, but at least it's new.

Fox airs new episodes of "Lie To Me" and "The Good Guys," from 8-10 p.m., while ABC has a new "Bachelorette" and "True Beauty."

There's a new "Closer" preceding "Rizzoli & Isles," while Lifetime has the TV movie "The Client List," starring Jennifer Love Hewitt, at 9 p.m.

Finally, the super-fun "James May's Toy Stories" (BBC America, 10 p.m.) is also new.
