So, nobody call my dad tonight. I can guarantee you he will consider disconnecting the phones rather than risk someone calling him and disturbing him watching tonight's National Championship game between Texas and his beloved Alabama (ABC, 8:30 p.m.)
My dad came to this country in 1970, during the height of the Bear Bryant era at Bama. I remember his reaction when Bear retired and when he died. (Or, as my dad might say, simply returned to his throne in Heaven).
Dad spends much of his days in retirement culling the internet for news about the Tide. He probably knows more about Bama star defensive back and Macon native Kareem Jackson than I do, even though I covered Jackson during his high school career at Westside.
So, you know where my family loyalties will be tonight. Ironically, my brother, who went to Alabama for a year, lives in Austin, TX, the seat of enemy territory, so he has a lot riding on this game as well.
Anyway, normally this time every year, I criticize the BCS system and curse the NCAA for not giving us a tournament-style true national championship. Today, I'll just say "Roll Tide!"
THURSDAY'S BEST BETS: Either out of ratings interest or out of respect for my father, none of the other networks are airing new episdes of anything tonight.
However, if you are a fan of "Chuck," which returns Sunday and Monday, you can catch up on key episodes from last season in a mini-marathon today on SyFy, beginning at 5 p.m.
