"Battlestar Galactica" (Sci Fi, 10 p.m.) fans who are saddened by the fact that there are only a handful of episodes left, here's some good news.
Sci Fi announced Thursday that the uncut pilot for "Caprica," the prequel spinoff that is supposed to debut in 2010 will be available April 29.
It's a rather unprecedented move to sell the DVD for a TV series before it airs, but in this case, I think it's a smart move on Sci Fi's part as a way to generate interest in the series.
For people who have heard all the raves about BSG but feel they are too behind to get on board the bandwagon, the good news for them is that "Caprica" is set 50 years before "BSG" and has an entirely different cast. In a phone interview I did with producers Ron Moore and David Eick, they said one need not have watched a minute of "BSG" to enjoy "Caprica."
WEEKEND'S BEST BETS: CBS has been running reruns most of the week, but it at least presents a new "Ghost Whisperer at 8 p.m. and a new "Numb3rs" tonight at 10 p.m.
On NBC, Tyra dumps poor Landry (hey, the guy killed another guys for her -- cut him a break!) on "Friday Night Lights" at 9 p.m.
On cable, USA presents new episodes of "Monk" and "Psych," beginning at 9 p.m.
On Saturday, popular Southern Rock band Drive By Truckers appear on "Austin City Limits" (PBS, 9 p.m.)
On Sunday, CBS airs the Grammy Awards at 8 p.m., while BBC America airs the BAFTAs at the same time.
The two-part miniseries "XIII" (NBC, 9 p.m.) follows a man who wakes up with no memory and a strange tattoo following the assassination of the President. It stars Stephen Dorff, Val Kilmer and Jessalyn Gilsig. Hopefully, it will be better than "The Last Templar" was.
Meanwhile, ABC airs new episodes of "Desperate Housewives" and "Brothers & Sisters," beginning at 9 p.m.
On cable, I'm really digging Diablo Cody's off-beat "United States of Tara" (Showtime, 10 p.m.), with Toni Collette a virtual shoo-in for an Emmy. It follows a new "L Word" and precedes a new "Secret Diary of a Call Girl" at 10:30 p.m. HBO counters with "Big Love" at 9 p.m. and "Flight of the Conchords" at 10 p.m.
Finally, in honor of Black History Month, TNT presents "Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story" starring Cuba Gooding Jr. at 8 p.m.
