At CeeCee's, get Southern fare served right

For those who love a hearty, filling Southern-style meal, there's a delicious little surprise for those willing to drive to downtown Roberta.

Take U.S. 80 west toward Crawford County. It's a route I've taken the past 15 or so years on my way to Alabama and north Florida. In all that time going through Roberta, I admit I've only braked at the stoplight and never taken a look around town.

I finally veered off the path recently and paid a visit to Roberta's downtown square, which this summer welcomed a new place to dine.

CeeCee's Family Restaurant can hold its own against any other establishment that offers down-home cooking.

CeeCee's serves up its meats and vegetables cafeteria-style. Prices are reasonable depending on if you add dessert and what meats are included that day.

I paid a visit on a late Saturday morning and was welcomed by a friendly wait staff. Since I came right before opening time, the meals were still being prepared in the kitchen. But when the time came, it was definitely worth the wait.

I'm told that the weekend crowd can expect fried or baked chicken, pork chops, country fried steak with white or brown gravy, and a variety of vegetables. I dined in for a little while but took home just about everything else on the menu that day.

The greens, cabbage and beans were cooked in a smoky, slightly sweet broth. The baked chicken was fork-tender and rubbed with spices. The fried chicken was crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside. Along with a few more trays of rice, corn, rolls or cornbread, your meal can start at a little more than $5.

There wasn't much I didn't like about the place. What you'll definitely want to try is the peach cobbler. I'd drive to CeeCee's from just about anywhere for their peach cobbler. The crust was definitely worth waiting for. Even days after my visit, my husband couldn't quit talking about it.

I was told that the owner has always loved cooking. I could tell from the day's samples that she's been doing it for a while, perfecting just the right crisp on the chicken and flavors on the vegetables.

The menu is still being changed around a little, but expect to find plenty of vegetables on any given day.

CeeCee's is a small, local business filled with friendly people. It's not pretentious in its interior design or atmosphere. The restaurant is small, the furniture is simple and a television set is the noisiest thing in the place.

It's a pretty drive this time of year along the two-lane U.S. 80 route to Roberta. If you happen to be heading that way, say hi to the folks at CeeCee's and stop in for a filling lunch or dinner. And don't forget the cobbler.
