A hot Middle Georgia night will be transformed into a sultry evening in Cuba when Macon Arts Alliance hosts Taste of the Arts: Havana Nights on Saturday night.
“Put on your best summer dresses and flowers in your hair. This is going to be a wonderful night of food, arts and dancing,” said Steven Fulbright, MainStreet Macon manager. “This is a fundraiser for the Macon Arts Alliance, of which I am a member of the board. This is our fourth year doing a themed party, although we’ve been doing (the event) for many years more than that. This is an event that we use to highlight the Arts Roundtable, which is a program of the Macon Arts Alliance.”
Many of the arts organizations in the midstate belong to the Macon Arts Alliance and this event gives the member organizations a chance to meet and mingle with supporters, as well as provide previews of their individual upcoming events and fall season shows.
“There are usually between 20 and 30 participating organizations,” Fulbright said. “We’ve been doing this event for probably 15 years or more and it is just so much fun. The themed events are particularly fun and we have a wide cross-section of people who come out to support the arts. There is a huge mix of people and it’s a very diverse group and it is so much fun.”

Each participating organization will set up a table featuring Cuban-inspired food and drink, as well as table decorations intended to attract attendees.
“We have three competitions,” Fulbright said. “There are awards for the best savory dish, the best sweet and the best table décor. Each of the participating organizations will have their own ‘celebrity chef’ and it’s just tremendously fun and entertaining to see what they all come up with. You really never know what you’re going to get!”
Tickets include complimentary beer and wine. The event also includes a silent auction.
“People will be able to buy wonderful pieces of art, as well as vacation getaways, festival tickets and many other fun surprises. This is a major part of our fundraiser, but it is always well received,” he said. “We also have a raffle, and this year the raffle is called Miami Nights Getaway and the tickets are $25 for one ticket or five for $100. ... The winner will receive a luxurious getaway to the American Riviera, valued at $1,200.”
Patrons are encouraged to dress up in Cuban-inspired costumes.
“Obviously, it’s not required, but it will make the event more fun. This is a dance party featuring DJ Kevin Nichols, so wear comfortable shoes,” he said. “I hope to see everyone there. This is definitely one of the most fun events in Middle Georgia every year. I can’t wait, personally.”
