Hay House hosts annual garden tours, market

Flower exhibits, a garden market and tours of the Hay House are all part of the 22nd annual Spring Stroll of Macon Houses and Gardens.

Set in downtown and the historic Vineville neighborhood, this year’s Spring Stroll runs Friday-Sunday and features a Historic Interiors Tour and a Macon Secret Gardens Tour.

“My favorite part is the opportunity to go behind the gates and see the gardens groomed by some of the most generous and wonderful Maconites,” said Susannah Maddux, a publicist for the event.

The Historic Interiors Tour happens Friday and Saturday evenings with a tour of seven renovated downtown lofts including those in the Telephone Exchange Building, the Myer Building, the Rhodes-Standard Building, Travis Jean and the Sterchi-Kessler Lofts.

Also included in the Historic Interiors tour is the Hay House, which features such innovations as early indoor plumbing, heating, ventilation and a speaker tube system in the Italian Renaissance Revival architectural style.

The Gardens Tour happens during the day Friday through Sunday and will include six private gardens in the Vineville Avenue corridor, including homes on Oak Haven Avenue, Beverly Place, Calloway Drive and Lenora Place.

During the weekend, the Florabrilliance Flower Exhibit will be on display on the main levels of the Hay House. The exhibit will showcase floral displays created by local floral designers and which are inspired by the house’s architecture.

The Hay House tour also will include a preview of the mansion’s third level restorations.

Also on the grounds of the Hay House will be the return of the Garden Market. Vendors will be on hand with items that include home accents, flowering plants, trees, perennials, birdhouses and patio accessories.

The market also features gardening seminars at 2 p.m. Friday and Saturday with Quincy Jones, a renowned landscape architect and author of the blog “The Art of the Garden.”

“The endurance of the event is a product of the perfect blend of tireless work by the entire Hay House board and staff, hours from countless dedicated volunteers, sponsors who continue to value this annual anchor fundraiser for Hay House, and strollers from in town and far away who continue to delight in all that Macon has to offer,” Maddux said.
