Having trouble getting into the Christmas spirit? The Perry Players’ musical “Christmas With You” might be the remedy to jump-start your holiday glee with its unique glimpse into the lives of a variety of colorful characters during the Christmas season.

This new musical combines Christmas scenes and all-time favorite Christmas songs, according to the play’s director, Hunter Hufnagel. Some of the songs are made into solos while others are sung by duets or ensembles.

“There are some funny scenes to go along with the songs ... funny scenes in the script,” he said, adding that the play is a glimpse into both funny and romantic scenes happening in other people’s homes. Things most people generally don’t think about, such as what actually goes on Christmas night after everyone has opened presents and people start to go home.

Some of the other scenes, according to Hufnagel, are about younger couples during Christmas and some of the more awkward times, such as a when people get presents they don’t like, but they don’t want to appear rude, so they act like they like the gifts.

“There’s some funny stuff in there I think people will really enjoy,” he said. “The scenes are all threaded together by many of the classic songs we hear through Christmas time ... it’s mostly a vignette ... showing different scenes, different stories. We’re opening the house on a bunch of different families to see how they do Christmas.”

The play has only one act with more than two dozen characters and more than 30 cast members, according to Tyler Yeomans, publicity manager for Perry Players, who also plays the character Lendall. He said the musical has eight scenes and a half dozen songs intertwined between some of the scenes.

Yeomans, who has been involved in theater for eight years, said “Christmas With You” is the second play he has worked on with Hufnagel, and the group only had four or five weeks to put it together.

“Anything Hunter does ... he does it 120 percent,” said Yeomans. “I think it’s going to be great!”

“We have a mixture of veteran actors, some from Middle Georgia ... and have lots of children who have come in,” said Hufnagel, adding that there is “basically a hodge podge of people” with various theatrical experience. “This has never been done in Middle Georgia before ... it’s fresh off the press.”
