Terry Smith, Regional Manager, AT&T
We’re in the business of communications and connectivity. We’re a worldwide communications and technology company connecting individuals, families and businesses anywhere at any time with any kind of communication capability, whether voice or high end data through our infrastructure and fiber optic capabilities and switching systems. We’re all about connectivity and communications.
Greatest contribution AT&T makes in Middle Georgia.
AT&T’s greatest contributions in Middle Georgia include investment, community support and our workforce. Between 2012 and 2014 we invested over $5 billion in the state, a significant portion in for infrastructure, fiber optic cable, wireless infrastructure, cell towers and the equipment for cell towers and wireless capabilities. We’re engaged in economic development initiatives in the region and have a strong, loyal and well-qualified workforce that’s tied to the community.
Why education is such a powerful, life-changing tool.
Most poverty is due to a lack of education. Education gives someone the skills to do the next thing in their life. Driving from my office to my house I see kids walking the streets who should be in school. Without an education they don’t have a chance. Education can influence a first generation college student. It’s meaningful for him, his family, and in the future, for his children. Education is the foundation for everything we do in life. It’s the foundation for success.
My hope for Education Together.
I hope we can change the lives of students who aspire to go to college but can’t afford it or are working multiple jobs in order to attend. We can assist them in creating a foundation, to strengthen themselves, their family and community. That’s my hope, to open a door that otherwise might not open. There are kids who think they can’t go to college because of money, and there’s no one to push them and to say, yes you can. I’m hopeful Education Together can make students and families aware of educational opportunities and change some lives.
How I will define the success of Education Together.
Having a scholarship student that graduates from college will be a success. At AT & T, by 2018 two-thirds of the jobs will require postsecondary education. So we’re investing in students and will measure success in scholarship students who earn a degree. How do we place a value on a changed life? How impactful will that be? And part of a changed life is students knowing they’re being supported.
