  • Houston County Spelling Bee champ is letter perfect

    Twenty-eight students competed Friday in the Houston County Spelling Bee in Perry. Kushagra Biswas spelled “macadamia” to win the competition. The runner-up was Matthew Amerson, who will move on with Biswas to compete in the next round. Biswas said he mastered 240 words in preparation for the event and thanked his friends, parents and teachers for helping him study.

Lawmakers vow to resist base closures

WASHINGTON -- Legislators on Capitol Hill vowed Friday to resist a recommendation from the Pentagon to close unneeded military bases around the country as a way to save money, saying communities could not afford it and defense budget cuts could be made elsewhere.
