Still perfect: After going 8-0 in its first Sun Belt Conference season last year, Georgia Southern started its conference schedule Saturday with a 44-20 win at Idaho. The Eagles (3-1) stay on the road this week to face Louisiana-Monroe. Matt Breida ran for 179 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Idaho, while Kevin Ellison threw for 105 yards and rushed for 134 yards and two touchdowns.
Back to action: Mercer had last week off, and it came at just about the right time for the Bears, who were banged up in their 2-1 start and needed extra time to prepare for their Southern Conference opener this week against Wofford. Wofford was the only conference team to blow out Mercer in its first season in the Southern Conference, cruising to a 34-6 win in November. The Terriers are 2-2 after beating Gardner-Webb 16-0 on Saturday.
Rolling along: Fort Valley State’s defense and special teams came up big in a 33-3 win over Benedict as the Wildcats won their third straight game, all in SIAC play. FVSU hosts Alderson Broaddus this week.
First loss: Kennesaw State suffered its initial loss in its debut season 31-27 at Dayton. The Owls are off this week.
Back to work II: Georgia State was off Saturday and hosts Liberty this week as it looks for its second win.
