Mercer sophomore quarterback John Russ and Vienna native and current Michigan State wide receiver Keith Mumphery were named as candidates Tuesday for the Allstate American Football Coaches Association Good Works Team.
Russ was named last year's Pioneer Football League Offensive Freshman of the Year, helping lead the Bears to a 10-win season. The Bears' offense ranked among the nation's leaders in scoring (38.3 points per game), total offense (449.6 yards per game) and rushing offense (277.9 yards per game).
O’Shaughnessey gets wild card
Former Stratford standout Becker O’Shaughnessey has accepted a qualifying wild card into the BB&T Atlanta Open, which will be played Saturday through July 27.
O’Shaughnessey, a rising junior at Alabama, will be one of 32 players in the qualifying rounds with four advancing into the main draw. O’Shaughnessey was a ITA doubles All-American this past season and led Alabama with 22 wins in singles He is a two-time second-team All-SEC performer.
Vine Ingle clinches state semifinal berth
The Vine Ingle 9-10 District Champions routed Midway 17-1 on Monday night to advance to the state semifinals beginning Thursday. Will Greene was the winning pitcher, with assists from Walker Perkins and Benjamin Stubbs. The three combined to hold Midway to one hit, while record a combined 9 strikeouts and limiting Greene went 2-for-2 with a double and triple. Clay Rowland, Jackson Moore and Coleman Cauley also collected two hits each. Vine-Ingle will play the also undefeated Columbus American at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
