Before the season, to a man, the coaches in GHSA Region 2-AAAA said the region race was wide open.
That talk has continued through the first half of the region season, and it looks like the coaches were right on the mark.
After a week off for all eight region teams last week, the teams are headed to the stretch run with a lot of key games left to play.
Howard and West Laurens kicked off the region slate for the week Thursday as the two teams that were winless in region play faced off in Macon.
Never miss a local story.
On Friday, the top six teams will face off against one another with Mary Persons hosting Rutland, Veterans playing at Perry and Baldwin hosting Westside.
Mary Persons and Veterans both enter Friday’s play at 3-0, while Baldwin and Perry are 2-1 and Westside and Rutland are 1-2.
And with three weeks left in the season after this week, there is a lot that can happen and a lot of movement that can take place in the standings.
Mary Persons still has to play Baldwin, Veterans and West Laurens, while Veterans has to play West Laurens and Baldwin, which also plays West Laurens.
Perry still gets Westside, Rutland and Howard, while Westside still has Howard and Rutland., which also has to play Howard.
That’s a lot to take in, but it also shows just how much things could change in the next few weeks, and that makes this region exciting.
Mary Persons and Veterans look like the class of the region right now, but if Perry can stretch its winning streak to three games Friday, it can get right in the mix. If Baldwin could knock off Mary Persons and Veterans, then it’s right there, as well.
Westside and Rutland still have a lot of chances to move up, also.
It’s going to be a hectic few weeks, but it’s also going to be exciting and interesting all at the same time. And that’s going to make things a lot of fun for everyone watching.
